Brief

Planys was engaged by FDD via the Scottish Enterprise Breakthrough Barrier Service at to help the company to develop it’s strategy for securing new business. As the undisputed leader in it’s field of manufacturing NTE displays for military applications the company had effectively peaked in it’s current market and was searching for sources of new business.

Breakthrough Barriers Business Diagnostics – identified the need for Market Portfolio Analysis to help the company identify it’s optimum approach to a selection of new potential markets.

Market Portfolio Analysis – analysed the attractiveness and relative strength of the company’s proposition in seven markets ranging from scientific instrumentation to high volume consumer applications using the military market as a control reference. The outcome was unusual for a market portfolio analysis and very powerful for the company.

Outcome

Two specific high quality, low volume markets were identified as the next logical areas of focus for the company – a natural progression from the military application that the company was very familiar with. However, we also discovered that by subtly shifting the proposition towards the company’s expertise in optimisation for near to eye applications and allowing other lower priced OEM products into the portfolio the company could now occupy a much more powerful position in the market and could address high volume consumer applications. FDD is now positioned as the ‘World’s Leading Near to Eye Display Company’ making full use of it’s leadership position in the military market and the optimisation technology that it has developed over the years.
